QR Code

A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a matrix code; it’s a bar code with 2 dimensions. It created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994.

QR Code

I’m sure you have seen barcodes before; nowadays you can find them everywhere on almost all the products. The main difference between QR Code and normal barcodes is its capacity to storage characters. In normal barcodes you are limited to put only 13 characters, but in QR Code you are able to put 7089 characters as long as they are numeric or 4296 characters when they are alphanumeric.

One dimension barcode

QR Code’s size will increase when we put more characters inside, in the beginning its size start with 21 X 21 pixels and it can increase to 177 X 177 pixels that is its greatest size.

Another advantage of QR Code is its ability for Error correction (data restoration). We can restore up to 30% of data even if the symbol is partially dirty or damaged.

QR Code can also tell type of data that stored inside them, like it’s an URL or Email Address or Text of an SMS or Phone Number or it’s just a normal Text.

One of the benefits for storing products in warehouses is that, before they used to store all the information about one product in the database and assign one code to it, then they had to create a barcode for it and put it on the product. By scanning the barcode they could find the information through database (if it was available in their system). Now with QR Code they can store all the information on the product and any one can scan it and read the information without connecting to database because all the data is there on the product.

How to read:

If you want to read a QR Code you need a scanner, you can also use your mobile phones’ camera to read it, but before that you need to install an application on you mobile phone. They wrote it by JAVA and it works with almost all of the mobile phones. Just go to this address with your mobile phone, it will start downloading and installing by itself.

If your camera’s quality is not that good program won’t be able to read all the QR Codes.

Please

How often do you use the word “Please” in your daily life?

Around 2 weeks ago me, my housemate and one of our local Chinese (Malaysian Chinese) friends went to a Chinese restaurant in Semenyih to eat lunch, all people there were Chinese except one that she was Malay and she could understand only Malay Language. Our friend asked her for one more Tiger Beer, He just pointed at empty bottle and said “Satu Lagi” that means “one more”. I told him you should use “please” when you ordering something. He said OH! You are right, but he was thinking for more than 2 minutes and he couldn’t remember “Please” in Malay!!!! He said they never use it. Me and my housemate was shocked that how come they never use it in their daily life.

Next day my housemate’s girlfriend (she is also local Chinese) came to our house. We asked her, do you know what is “Please” in Malay?
Same thing happened, she was thinking for more than 5 minutes. She said that they never use it. She could remember Please in Chinese (Cantonese) but she said it’s kind of weird to use it in daily life speaking ….
